Here’s Some Food for Thought: Google’s Sandbox vs. SEO

After reading a recent blog post about a particular well-known and respected site (at least within the technical internet realm) having trouble ranking on Google, I began to dig a little deeper.  What I found was a wealth of information - or rather speculation – about the idea of a Google Sandbox Effect.

A quick trip to the online information repository (Wikipedia) will give you bit of information about this idea that Google somehow holds back rankings on new sites.  “New” is of course subjective.  I personally don’t consider a site that has been around for longer than a year to be new, but the aforementioned website has been around for more than a year, and yet seems to have found itself in the Sandbox.  Strangely, brand new sites sometimes rank very well at first, and then drop out of the 1000 after a week or two without any apparent reason…..  [read the rest at the USA SEO Pros blog]

Using SEO and Social Media to Gain Authentic Exposure

Working in the SEO and marketing industry has exposed me to all sorts of social media, and today I incorporate Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Myspace into my daily routine.  As a result, I come across plenty of news articles, blog posts, pod casts and various other social media flotsam throughout the day.  Today I found a blog post from Fred Wilson, a venture capitalist who works with companies that are addressing new marketing platforms.

In his blog, Fred talks about the social media platform and his remarkable experience with @kogibbq on Twitter.  Briefly, Kogi BBQ is two taco trucks that drive around Los Angeles and tweet their location throughout the day.  They have become remarkably success, and have attracted a large following on Twitter as well as throughout LA.  Wilson says this type of media exposure is of the “earned” variety, a phrase he picked up from Jerry Solomon – the executive producer of Epoch media and Wilson’s brother in law.

Solomon compares the brand/consumer relationship to that of a man and a mistress.  After a while, the jewelry and other gifts grow old, and the mistress begins to want more.  The same is true with a brand/consumer relationship Solomon says.  Brands should focus on dialogue with the consumer instead of engaging in mere monologue.

This all felt remarkably familiar to me.  The goal of search engine optimization is to draw attention to a particular business or website.  We do that in a variety of ways, but blogging is one particular approach we use.  This creates a platform for feedback from consumers, both potential and current. The conversation can move from just the monologue to a true dialogue.  I use Twitter and Facebook daily, and it opens the door for feedback from the public and the consumer.

Aside from large companies with very deep pockets, the days of effective TV advertising are gone.  Kogi BBQ can’t afford a spot during the Superbowl, but they don’t need to.  They are able to use tools like Twitter to build a following and grow their business.

Fred Wilson said the big challenge for marketers and advertisers now is to engage consumers without alienating them with perceived spam.  Despite the popularity of Google’s Adwords program, how often do you click on a “sponsored link”?  I know I never do, because I know it’s a marketing link.  And an unwelcome one at that.  I prefer to digest my internet material organically

A very effective way for businesses to reach their intended audience is through tools like blogs, Twitter and by using techniques like search engine optimization.  This way you’re ensuring that your audience sees the message, but it doesn’t feel like they’re being advertised at.  Perception is reality.  If you’d like to learn more about what SEO can do for you, visit our site or find me on Twitter (@realusaseopros).  I would love to start a dialogue with you!

Search engine optimization is a method we have discussed on SEO Tips ‘n Tricks for a very long time. And today is no exception. The company I work for (USA SEO Pros [usaseopros.com]) specializes in just that, utilizing methods recommended and adhered to by search engines themselves, we have been able to successfully achieve almost 4 MILLION first page placements, and encompassing many industries, USASEOPros has evolved as the web evolves and works hard to provide the best in SEO. But what can YOU do to help yourself? Imagine you have hired USASEOPros or another company to work on your SEO, and want to know how you too can contribute. A blog much like this is a GREAT way to interact and become an authority in your industry, I have mentioned that many times, but thats not it, there are many many options available to you. From a well formatted press release to updating your site’s content more often. Each of these gives the search engines a reason to crawl your site.

If you feel that this is too much work or are unsure if this is something you can do correctly then a webmaster or a search engine company may very well a viable option for you. That’s why companies like USA SEO Pros exist, to assist companies on their SEO without having to spend the time working on that themselves and allowing experts to do that.

Work at Home? Part One

This is a term that we hear ALOT. People who want to rank on the first page of the major search engines for terms like ‘work at home’, ‘earn a six figure income’ or ‘home based business’. And these terms are incredibly difficult for ANYONE to get to, because of how many people WANT work at home! Its what is considered a competitive key phrase. How would someone get to the top of Google or Yahoo for ‘work at home?’ An incredibly difficult term with competition, and currently there are 2,610,000,000 results listed and there are MANY MANY ways to rank on work at home. So how can you get to the front page of Google for work at home? I have typed alot out without yet answer that question. And that’s because there is no simple answer, or an easy answer. You can write many articles on many sites, and link to your site/blog/article, you can blog, write comments, put up a series of hyper focused sites specializing on that term, or any and all of these. But what does matter is writing content pertinent to your subject, and in this case its ‘work at home’, so you have to make sure everything you write for that, you have to make sure makes reference to work at home, in any way. Sometimes its OK to break the two up, but only WHEN it makes sense, e.g. if you ever plan to ‘work from or at your home’ you will still get the level of penetration of key phrase to content you need for that term, and it comes up the same amount of time, you just do not want to add ‘home’ in one sentence and then ‘work’ in another and not once use ‘at’ anywhere within your site, that doesn’t yield any placements for you anywhere. Google, Yahoo! and MSN will not collate ’work at home’ from that key phrase placement. So there you have it, part one of my tutorial of ranking for tougher key phrases. Work at home. Try it out on one of your own projects and your own key phrase.
